FAQs

If your travel plans take you outside your home province or territory, it’s important to know your provincial or territorial government health insurance plan (GHIP) may not cover all your medical expenses.

If you do have a medical emergency, in most cases, the province you’re visiting will bill your home province directly. You won’t have to cover costs upfront – unless you’re visiting Quebec. As the only province not to sign an interprovincial billing agreement, Quebec’s visitors may have to pay for medical costs and then submit claims for reimbursement to their home province. In some cases, this also may be true for Quebec residents visiting other provinces.

For these reasons, you should consider purchasing travel protection which will cover medical expenses not covered by your GHIP. And remember, wherever you are, you’ll need to show your health card to prove you’re insured, so make sure to bring it with you when travelling.

Not all medical expenses are covered by your government health insurance plan (GHIP) if you’re outside your home province. Services you may be required to pay for if you don’t have travel insurance include ambulance services or transportation back home. In addition, your insurance coverage for emergency medical care may be limited to the cost of the service in your home province. You would be responsible for the difference if fees are higher in the province you're visiting.

By purchasing a travel insurance plan, you can help fill in these gaps in coverage.

We have packages and plans that cover all age groups starting at 15 days old and with no upper age limits. If you are age 65 or older, Allianz Global Assistance may ask you to answer a few simple questions about your health to make sure you have the most appropriate coverage.

Yes. You can purchase coverage for up to eight people travelling together under the same policy, including adults and children. Each adult would be rated individually, and any children up to 18 years of age can be eligible for coverage free of charge. All members in the group, including children, must be listed to be covered under the policy.

Yes. Single trip and multi-trip Emergency Medical Plans offer either a $0 or $500 deductible. You have the option of selecting the $500 deductible amount to lower the premium.

Some Canadians may have travel insurance through their employer benefits program or as part of benefits included on a credit card. We recommend reviewing your coverage levels by contacting your employee or credit card benefits provider before travelling to review the types of benefits included, any special terms and conditions (i.e. whether your trip costs need to be paid on your credit card to be eligible for coverage) as well as the dollar limits for each benefit to ensure they’re adequate.

A standalone travel insurance policy can provide more comprehensive protection and should be considered if the travel coverage provided through your credit card or employer benefits is not sufficient for your travel protection needs.
